The gourmet-quality live North Atlantic Lobsters we harvest depend on cool stable ocean temperatures to reproduce and sustain their populations; but, the electricity, gasoline, and diesel fuel we burn – to get them from the ocean floor to your door – release fossil carbon emissions (CO2) into the atmosphere that contribute to global warming, which in time may effect the cool stable temperatures of the North Atlantic Ocean waters.

This awareness directed Lobster.COM to take action. Our emissions may be light; but we wanted to know exactly what we release into the atmosphere. We wanted to be "carbon-neutral." First, we formalized our assumptions and calculated our carbon emissions. Then, we joined the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) through which we purchase Carbon Financial Instruments ("carbon credits") to "offset" our carbon emissions.

In the future, as we reduce our carbon emissions, perhaps we'll earn carbon credits that we can sell to other companies. Until then, we'll continue to purchase carbon credits from companies that already reduce their carbon emissions. We expect this initiative will motivate us to reduce our carbon emissions quicker, just as it rewards other companies with economic incentives to do the same.
